Principals Report

As we reach the midpoint of Term 2, we are pleased to share some highlights of what has already been a vibrant and productive term filled with student achievement, growth and connection.

We’ve recently seen fantastic participation in our whole-school Cross Country and Colour Run. It was inspiring to see students from both campuses lacing up their shoes, cheering each other on and embracing the fun with colour and energy. Events like these bring our community together and remind us of the importance of health, wellbeing and school spirit. Well done to patrula who led the charge on the day and all students for their house spirit!

Our students continue to shine beyond the classroom. A team of Year 9 and 10 students represented Hobart City High School at the Science and Engineering Challenge, applying their problem-solving skills, teamwork and creativity to real-world scenarios. Their enthusiasm and collaborative approach were a credit to our school and a great reflection of our commitment to excellence and innovation.

Our Horizons program continues to offer unique and enriching experiences. A group of Year 9 students recently completed a practice walk to South Cape Rivulet in preparation for their upcoming journey on the Overland Track. It was a physically and mentally challenging experience that gave students a taste of what’s to come and built a strong sense of resilience and teamwork.

Our Year 7 and Year 10 camps were also resounding successes. Year 7 students enjoyed building new friendships and navigating the challenges and excitement of camp life, while Year 10 students embraced a program that encouraged leadership, self-awareness and personal growth. Both camps play a key role in supporting the social and emotional development of our young people.

Looking ahead, anticipation is building for two remarkable opportunities: the Cradle Mountain Digital Photography Camp and the Overland Track Expedition. These experiences will allow our students to connect deeply with Tasmania’s natural environment while developing skills in creative expression, outdoor education, and personal reflection.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank our families for their ongoing support and involvement in discussions of learning. Your engagement plays an essential role in each student's growth and success and we value the strong partnerships we share with our parent and carer community.

A reminder that Hobart City High School proudly offers two pathways for students in Years 11 and 12, providing options that suit a range of interests, aspirations and learning needs. If you’d like to find out more about these pathways or discuss what might be the best fit for your young person, please don’t hesitate to contact Daniel Pickett via email daniel.pickett@decyp.tas.gov.au for further information and guidance.

As always, I want to thank our dedicated staff for their planning and care in making these opportunities possible and for continuing to empower our students to thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Wishing all our students and families a safe and fulfilling second half of the term.

Year 7 Camp - Spring Beach

Year 7 students had a wonderful time at camp and were extremely lucky with the weather. Year 9 And 10 Engineering Design

Year 9 and 10 Engineering Design students attended the annual Science and Engineering Challenge at the Sandy Bay UTAS campus. They participated in challenges including bridge design, communication with light signals, electricity network optimisation, fish trap design, glider design, job juggle (scheduling), polar base design, and wind turbine blade design. The finale was the bridge load testing which took place in front of all the participants. In competition with six other schools, Hobart City High’s team came first, having designed the strongest bridge which withstood the ‘bridge buster’ ingots. Well done to the bridge team and to all the students who attended!

News From Our School Association

Did you know that all parents/carers of students at HCHS are automatically members of our School Association? This means that all parents/carers are warmly invited to attend our monthly School Association meetings, where we get updates from school leadership, give feedback from a parent/carer’s perspective and work with the school community to enable our young people to thrive.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3 June, 5:00 pm–6:30 pm at the New Town Campus meeting room (access through main entrance). We’d love to see you there!

If you’d like to know more about what we do, or get involved, please email: hchs.assocation@decyp.tas.gov.au

Year 8 Textiles And Fashion

Students in Year 8 Textiles & Fashion have been learning how to safely use the sewing machine. They have been practising their skills by creating tote bags. These are lined with a fabric of their choice and feature their own designs, mostly using fabric markers, but also featuring embellishments such as embroidery and buttons.
