News From the Principal

What a busy and exciting term it has been at Hobart City High School! Our students have embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and excellence, making this term one to remember.

We have had a strong focus on building our school climate and sense of belonging. Our school improvement target for School Climate was to achieve >54% medium to high engagement. We are excited to share that HCHS achieved 62% medium to high engagement in this domain – illustrating the target being met and exceeded.

The SIP Target for School Belonging was to improve from 64% in 2023 to achieve >69% medium to high engagement in 2024. The 2024 data illustrates that HCHS achieved 67% medium to high engagement in this domain – illustrating the target has yet to be met, however pleasing progress was made.

The Year 7 surfing excursion was a wonderful experience, with students developing new skills and building their resilience on the waves. The Ignite Arts Showcase was another highlight, celebrating the incredible creativity and talent within our school community. Thank you to everyone involved in making this such an amazing evening.

We are incredibly proud of our Solar Car Challenge team, who are preparing to compete at the National Final in Sydney—good luck to these innovative and hardworking students as they represent our school on the big stage! We also wish our Solar Boat team good luck in the finals on Monday.

On the sporting front, our teams represented our school with pride at the Southern Basketball Championships, showcasing teamwork, skill, and determination. A huge thanks to all the coaches who generously gave up their time to support our students preparing and at the event.

It was also a pleasure to welcome our future Year 7 students at the Year 6 Orientation Day. Their excitement and eagerness to begin their High School journey was inspiring and we look forward to supporting them as they transition to Hobart City High School.

As we approach the end of the year, I encourage everyone to keep our 4Bs front of mind: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe and Be a Learner. These values are the foundation of our school culture and will help us finish the year strong, both academically and socially. Adhering to our 4Bs and displaying our values of courage, growth, respect, responsibility and connection will ensure all students get to participate in all the exciting end of year events.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making Hobart City High School a place where our students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Britany, Holly & Andrew

Tasmanian Solar Challenge

This year we had 25 students in years 8 to 10 participate in the Tasmanian Solar Challenge.  This competition involves designing, building, and racing solar powered cars and boats.  The HCHS team built 7 cars and 4 boats making it the largest team in Tasmania.  HCHS hosted the statewide car competition on Saturday the 2nd of November and finished in 4th place.  This was an excellent result and qualified them to enter the national competition in Sydney on the 7th and 8th of December.  The statewide boat competition is on Monday the 2nd of December at Friends School.  The hard work and enthusiasm by all students participating in this program shows the passion for learning STEM at HCHS.

Digital Photography News

Photography is an art form that offers opportunities to engage students with the latest technologies.

Photography provides a platform for students to express their creativity and explore visual storytelling. By experimenting with angles, lighting, composition, and editing, students learn to think artistically and make aesthetic decisions. This creative exploration can help nurture a sense of individuality and imagination.

Photography continues to be a popular medium not only for documenting moments, but also a powerful tool for defining our identity in a constantly changing world.

In today's digital age, nearly everyone has access to a camera through smartphones, making photography more ingrained in daily life than ever before. Whether it's for preserving memories, expressing creativity, connecting with others, or documenting history, photography has become an important part of modern life, shaping both individual experiences and cultural narratives.

At HCHS we have three senior Digital Photography classes.

Our photography teachers decided to give students the opportunity to exhibit their digital photographs by organising a digital photography competition.

Students from all three digital photography classes were invited to enter, plus any other keen photographers within the school.

We asked students to enter their photographs into any of the six categories of the Elements of Design: Tone, Texture, Shape, Form, Line and Colour.  What a fantastic way to engage students in exploring the fundamental principles of visual design through photography! We wanted the competition to be as broad as possible so that every student had the opportunity to enter.

The standard of entries was high, and this made judging a difficult task.  However, there were some stand out entries which have been successful.  We had a selection of judges who deliberated long and hard and we finally were able to agree on an overall winner, a winner for all 6 categories and 6 judges’ commendations – one for each category.

The overall winner:     Oscar N. Year 9

Winner of the Line category:                                         Oscar N. Year 9

Judges’ commendation:                                                   Jacob C.  Year 10

Winner of the Shape category:                                      Breeana C. Year 10

Judges’ commendation:                                                   Zailee J.   Year 9

Winner of the Texture category:                                  Ryan J. Year 10

Judges’ commendation:                                                   Emmi S.  Year 10

Winner if the Tone category:                                         An L. Year 10

Judges’ commendation:                                                   Khushi K. Year 10

Winner of the Colour category:                                     Mia P. Year 10

Judges’ commendation:                                                    Jemma V. Year 10

Winner of the Form category:                                        Lachie M. Year 10

Judges’ commendation:                                                    Henry G. Year 7

We thank all the students who participated in the Digital Photography competition and offer our congratulations to the winning students.

Students will be recognised in assembly and be presented with their prizes.

The exhibition of photos will remain on display until the end of the year at the NT Campus.

Year 10 Geography Environmental Studies

For Geography, students in Year 10 are conducting a local investigation into the New Town Rivulet and Derwent River as part of our Environmental Change and Management Unit. Last week students tested water and undertook field observations to investigate the human impact on our waterways. The field data collected will be used in their assessment for the term. It was great to take our Geography learning outside the classroom.

Have Your Say On Foundational Supports

Have your say on Foundational Supports

Governments are working together to design and deliver additional disability supports in the community.

These additional supports are called Foundational Supports and are separate to those delivered through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or mainstream services.

The Department of Social Services want feedback and ideas on how to design Foundational Supports for families and children aged under 9 in their care where there is a developmental concern, delay and/or disability.

Share your thoughts by:

  • completing the online questionnaire or providing a submission
  • adding a comment to the Ideas Wall
